The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) says Ghana’s power grid is gradually stabilising after a fire at GRIDCo’s Akosombo switching station disrupted electricity supply across parts of the country last month.
The regulator said restoration works have progressed, with generation at Akosombo now fully restored and feeding into the national grid.
“PURC’s technical teams have carried out a preliminary site inspection to assess the damage and the impact of the incident on the power supply,” the commission said in a release on Monday, May 5.
It said it is continuing to track recovery efforts by key power sector operators, including the Volta River Authority (VRA), GRIDCo, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), and NEDCo, as they work to normalise system operations.
“The Commission is currently monitoring efforts to restore the affected generating units and normalise the power distribution system,” PURC said.
Beyond the immediate recovery, the regulator said it is also overseeing wider infrastructure interventions, including transformer replacement programmes and ongoing smart meter deployment aimed at improving efficiency and reducing system losses.
It said these reforms are part of broader efforts to strengthen reliability in both generation and distribution segments of the power sector.
“The Commission… wishes to reassure the general public that it will exercise the appropriate regulatory powers to ensure that utilities adhere to the Quality-of-Service benchmark for the supply of electricity,” PURC said.
PURC encouraged consumers to report unresolved outages, billing challenges, and service disruptions through its regional offices and digital platforms as stabilisation efforts continue.
