Commuters across Ghana will face a 20% hike in public transport fares starting Friday, August 8, 2025, as the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) and other operator unions cite surging operational costs and recent government policy changes as key drivers behind the decision.
In a joint press release, signed by General Secretary Emmanuel Ohene-Yeboah and Acting National Chairman Alhaji Tanko, the transport unions noted that the fare adjustment was made in accordance with the Administrative Arrangement on Public Transport Fares, a framework that guides periodic reviews based on cost fluctuations.
The increase applies to shared taxis, intra-city (tro-tro) services, intercity (long-distance) travel, and haulage transport.
“This adjustment is necessary due to the non-corresponding drop in prices of spare parts and services after the 15% fare reduction on May 21, 2025,” the statement explained.
The unions outlined three major factors compelling the hike. These include delayed market response to price reductions on spare parts, the GH₵1.00 fuel levy, and the poor condition of roads.
“We kindly request all Commercial Transport Operators / Companies to comply with the new fares and post same at their loading terminals. We further request all Operators, Commuters, and the General Public to cooperate for the successful implementation of the new fares,” the statement said.
