The Dean of the University of Cape Coast Business School, Professor John Gatsi, has called on corporate institutions to prioritize support for the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares, by integrating it into their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategies.
In a statement of endorsement, Prof. Gatsi praised companies like Coca-Cola, Unilever, Johnson & Johnson, and the MTN Ghana Foundation for their ongoing support for healthcare initiatives in Ghana. He emphasized the critical role the private sector plays in strengthening public health systems, particularly in the fight against chronic diseases.
He said the government should encourage firms to allocate a fair share of their CSR budgets to the Mahama Cares fund, pointing out that CSR contributions are tax-deductible, making them financially viable and socially impactful.
The Mahama Cares fund has emerged as a vital national programme aimed at providing assistance to Ghanaians battling chronic health conditions.
Prof. Gatsi urged CEOs and CSR committees to view the fund not as a political initiative, but as a humanitarian one deserving of broad-based support.
He cited the MTN Ghana Foundation’s $13 million investment in health, education, and empowerment, and the GNPC Foundation’s contributions to healthcare infrastructure, as examples of how corporate support can drive national development.
Prof. Gatsi also called on Ghanaian-owned and multinational companies to include Mahama Cares in their annual CSR frameworks.
“This is a time to demonstrate corporate empathy chronic illnesses affect all Ghanaians, regardless of political beliefs,” he said.
