The Government has confirmed that procurement processes are well advanced for the construction of 24-Hour Economy Modern Markets across the country, in a move aimed at enhancing local trade, boosting business opportunities, and supporting economic activity around the clock. The announcement was made during the President’s recent address to Parliament, where he outlined key initiatives under the Government’s Reset Agenda.
Speaking in Parliament, the President emphasized that the 24-Hour Economy Modern Markets are part of broader efforts to strengthen local governance and decentralization. “The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, has finalised the designs for the 24-Hour Economy Modern Markets to be adopted and constructed by all MMDAs. Procurement processes are far advanced to commence the construction of the 24-Hour Markets,” he stated.
The 24-hour markets initiative complements other ongoing infrastructure and social projects aimed at improving living standards and access to essential services across the country. Among these are major works in the water, housing, and coastal protection sectors. Phase 2 of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project is currently under construction, reinforcing the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable coastal communities from tidal waves.
Preparatory work is also set to begin on the Damango and Sunyani water supply expansion projects, while urban water supply projects in Keta, Wenchi, and Sekondi-Takoradi are at various stages of implementation. In a landmark development for the island community of Anyako, residents now have access to clean drinking water, with the Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA) scheduled to commission the project next week. Additionally, rural water supply projects are ongoing in eight locations nationwide.
In terms of local governance support, the government has allocated GHS 6.3 billion to the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) to cover the full 2025 fiscal year, enabling MMDAs to execute their Medium-Term Development Plans and Annual Action Plans. In a historic move, GHS 100 million in monthly allowances have also been disbursed to all Assembly Members for the first time, further strengthening the decentralization framework and boosting the capacity of local government officials to deliver services.
With procurement processes for the 24-Hour Economy Modern Markets progressing steadily, the initiative is expected to create more commercial activity, expand employment opportunities, and provide modern trading spaces for vendors and businesses across all districts. The project aligns with the government’s broader agenda to stimulate economic growth, attract private sector participation, and ensure continuous, reliable access to goods and services for citizens nationwide.
