President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has described as transformational his government’s achievements in the Ghana energy sector.
In his speech during the final “State of the Nation Address” to Parliament, the President cited among other key achievements the stabilization of Ghana energy sector legacy debt, significant progress in electricity access, and strides in renewable energy development.
He noted that electricity access had increased from 79.3% in 2017 to 88.85% in 2025, and also emphasized advancements in renewable energy, citing completed projects such as the 4 megawatts (MW) floating solar PV at Bui and the 15MW solar PV at Kaleo. These are alongside other ongoing projects like the 100MW solar PV under construction at Bui. These initiatives highlight key projects in the Ghana energy sector.
The President said these developments have been key in achieving Ghana’s target of 10% renewable energy by 2030.
Reflecting on the financial state of the sector, President Akufo-Addo remarked that his administration inherited a US$2.5 billion Ghana energy sector legacy debt in 2017. Through negotiations with Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and prudent financial management, he asserted that the debt level had been maintained at US$2.5 billion, averting a projected increase to US$12.5 billion.
Ghana’s improvement in electricity access aligns with global recognition of its progress. However, some rural communities still lack reliable and affordable electricity, suggesting that challenges remain in achieving universal access.
President Akufo-Addo concluded his address by expressing confidence in the foundations laid during his tenure, asserting that they would serve the Ghana energy sector well for generations.
