Pioneer Food Cannery, a subsidiary of Thai Union Group, has opened a $14 million cold storage facility in Tema to safely preserve fish. The 8,000-tonne facility, equipped with modern salting and sizing equipment, aims to reduce logistical delays and consolidate storage for raw materials needed in products like “StarKist tuna.”
Mr. Johnny Ladouche, PFC Plant Director, highlighted the challenge of finding suitable rented cold storage in Tema, emphasising the benefit of having their own facility. Mr. Sven Massen, Europe Operations Director of Thai Union Group, remarked on the facility as a demonstration of their commitment to Ghana, stating, “For all the years PFC has been in Ghana, it has not really owned a lot of material assets.” He noted the change in circumstances with the new cold storage, adding, “I believe it’s a tremendous commitment of the Thai Union Group into PFC and into Ghana.”
Mr. Khun Thirapong Chansiri, CEO and President of Thai Union Group, identified this cold storage facility as their first major investment in PFC since 2010, expressing confidence in Ghana, Tema, and the PFC management team. Mr. Isaac Ashai Odamtten, Member of Parliament for Tema East, praised PFC’s long-standing collaboration with Tema and encouraged further investment in human resources, expecting improved living conditions and standards for employees due to cost savings from the new facility.
Mr. Abdul-Aziz Ayaba Musah, Deputy Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, noted that the investment aligns with the government’s objectives for the fishing sector, focusing on hygienic fish preservation and reducing post-harvest losses. He stated, “This new facility embodies our collective commitment to excellence in food preservation and distribution and to leverage the latest refrigeration technologies to extend the shelf life of fish products, reduce spoilage, and enhance food safety. These improvements are essential for meeting both domestic and international standards.”
