The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament has expressed serious concern over financial irregularities highlighted in the Auditor-General’s special audit report on government payables and arrears for the year ending December 31, 2024.
During a session on Wednesday, officials from the Ministry of Energy faced intense questioning over liabilities submitted to the Ministry of Finance, which revealed questionable claims totaling GH¢4.4 billion, including duplicated contracts.
PAC members criticized the recurring nature of such irregularities in public financial management, emphasizing that the country cannot continue operating under such conditions if it is to maintain fiscal integrity.
In response, Mr. Richard Gyan-Mensah, Deputy Minister of Energy and Green Transition, explained that the irregularities resulted from “inadvertent errors” and assured the Committee that the discrepancies had been addressed in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance.
The Committee reiterated the urgent need for stronger accountability measures and reforms in financial reporting to prevent similar lapses in the future, noting that such occurrences undermine public confidence in government spending.
