The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr. Godwin Edudzi Tamaklo, has conducted an inspection of fuel installations in Tema to assess their operations and identify areas for improvement in Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
Accompanied by Deputy CEO Dr. Sheila Addo and other senior NPA officials, Mr. Tamaklo visited the Ghana Petroleum Mooring Systems Limited (GPMS), a facility responsible for supplying fuel vessels and transferring fuel to onshore storage terminals.
During the visit, the GPMS management provided insights into the technical processes involved in fuel importation and distribution, as well as some of the challenges facing the sector, including infrastructure constraints and regulatory compliance.
Mr. Tamaklo stressed the urgent need for the Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) to resume refining operations, stating that a fully operational refinery would reduce Ghana’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products, stabilize fuel prices, and create more jobs in the industry.
He assured stakeholders that the NPA is committed to providing the necessary regulatory support to facilitate the refinery’s revival while addressing broader challenges in the petroleum downstream sector.
TOR, Ghana’s only state-owned refinery, has faced operational setbacks over the years due to financial difficulties, equipment breakdowns, and management issues. However, there have been ongoing discussions about restructuring and securing investment to restore its refining capacity.
Mr. Tamaklo reiterated the NPA’s commitment to improving fuel supply chain efficiency and ensuring that Ghana’s petroleum infrastructure remains robust to meet the country’s growing energy demands.
