No plea agreement has been reached between businessman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, and the Attorney General in the ongoing Exim Bank loan case.
This was announced in court after the court had earlier granted an extension of time for the parties to negotiate a possible plea agreement following a proposal by the accused person.
With the negotiations ending without an agreement, the court has directed that the case proceed to trial.
The prosecution has been ordered to file its disclosures within 14 days to facilitate the commencement of the trial.
The court has also scheduled a Case Management Conference for Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m.
Mr Boasiako, who is currently in prison for illegal mining offenses linked to his company, Akonta Mining Company Limited, and two other accused persons are facing four charges in connection with an alleged GH¢30 million financial transaction involving the Export-Import Bank of Ghana (Exim Bank).
The charges include defrauding by false pretences, uttering a forged document, money laundering, and intentionally causing financial loss to a public body.
The prosecution alleges that the accused persons’ conduct resulted in financial loss of approximately GH¢30 million to the public body.
With the plea negotiations having failed, the case will now proceed to the next stage, with the prosecution required to disclose the witness statements, exhibits and other evidence it intends to rely on at trial, ahead of the substantive hearing.
