The National Lottery Authority (NLA) has donated GH₵100,000 to the Volta Regional Coordinating Council in direct support of victims displaced by severe tidal waves along Ghana’s southeastern coast. The donation, delivered through the NLA’s Good Causes Foundation, marks the first institutional response to the region’s urgent appeal for assistance.
At a formal presentation in Ketu South, Mr. Mohammed Abdul-Salam, Director-General of the NLA, handed over the cheque to Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, who was joined by Municipal Chief Executive Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie and members of the local assembly.
“We have seen the devastation the tidal waves have caused in these communities, and that is why when the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, through the Regional Minister, appealed to the NLA for support, we prioritized it. We believe our contribution will provide immediate relief to these displaced families and support them in this time of need,” Mr. Abdul-Salam said.
The donation comes as communities in Agavedzi, Asalakope, and Amunitsi grapple with widespread destruction caused by tidal surges that have left many families homeless and cut off from their livelihoods. Residents have been living in temporary shelters with limited access to food, clean water, and basic supplies.
Mr Gunu confirmed that the NLA is the first national institution to respond to their request for support. He expressed appreciation for the swift intervention and emphasized that the funds would be directed toward emergency needs such as food, clothing, and temporary shelter for affected families.
MCE Nicholas Kwabla Worclachie added that the support will make a “substantial impact” on the recovery process and praised the NLA for prioritizing the welfare of vulnerable communities.
The NLA’s donation was facilitated through its Good Causes Foundation, the Authority’s official vehicle for corporate social responsibility. The Foundation operates under Section 2(3) of the National Lotto Act, with a mandate to provide support for vulnerable populations including the aged, orphans, persons with disabilities, and the destitute. Its work spans four thematic areas: Health, Education, Youth and Sports Development, and Arts and Culture.
The Volta Region continues to experience recurrent coastal erosion and tidal surges, which have placed mounting pressure on local governments to find long-term adaptation and support strategies. In the short term, however, interventions like the NLA’s are proving critical in helping communities manage the immediate humanitarian fallout.
The donation underscores the importance of cross-sectoral collaboration in times of disaster and affirms the NLA’s commitment to responsive, community-centered action.
