Newmont’s footprint in Ghana is increasingly being defined by its social investments alongside its mining operations, with sustained interventions in health and education earning growing recognition from leading national institutions. Through targeted partnerships and long-term funding commitments, the company is positioning itself as a development partner contributing directly to human capital development and public health outcomes.

In recent months, multiple institutions have publicly acknowledged Newmont’s role in supporting vulnerable populations, underscoring the company’s contribution to Ghana’s broader social development priorities. Among the most notable is recognition from the The Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research (NMIMR), which has highlighted Newmont’s consistent financial support for hepatitis B vaccination programmes.
Hepatitis B remains a major public health concern in Ghana due to its high prevalence and rapid transmission rates. NMIMR has been at the forefront of nationwide education and vaccination efforts aimed at preventing a potential health crisis. Newmont’s funding support has enabled the Institute to provide free hepatitis B vaccinations on a sustained basis, expanding access to preventive healthcare for at-risk populations.
The partnership between Newmont and NMIMR extends beyond hepatitis B prevention. The company has also sponsored national campaigns targeting the elimination of Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), including lymphatic filariasis, onchocerciasis, schistosomiasis, leprosy, Buruli ulcer and yaws. These diseases disproportionately affect low-income communities and are often associated with long-term disability, social exclusion, reduced productivity and entrenched poverty.
At a time when funding from traditional development partners has declined, Newmont’s intervention has helped bridge critical financing gaps, allowing essential healthcare services to reach communities that might otherwise be excluded from life-saving interventions.

Education impact recognised by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation
Newmont’s education-focused investments have also received recognition from the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, which acknowledged the company’s contribution to expanding access to quality education in underserved communities. Through a three-year partnership, Newmont and the Foundation are establishing six Artificial Intelligence (AI) Smart Laboratories designed to introduce students to robotics, coding, 3D modelling and other emerging technologies.
The impact of this initiative is already visible. Just over a year ago, Kona D/A Primary & JHS had no functional AI laboratory. Today, the school hosts one of Ghana’s most promising AI and robotics teams, supported by a fully equipped 50-seater lab with tablets, robotics kits, AI learning materials and trained master coaches providing hands-on instruction.
The effectiveness of this investment was demonstrated at the Ghana Robotics Competition (GRC) 2025, which brought together 74 teams from 37 middle schools, 26 high schools and 11 universities nationwide. Despite having only three days to prepare and competing for the first time, the Kona D/A Primary & JHS team — made up of Godfred Ofori (14), Victoria Tabi Boakye (10) and Austin Osei Okrah (13) — emerged winners of the national competition.
Further recognition followed when Austin Osei Okrah was named overall best performer in the Tech’s League, earning the title Controller Conqueror for GRC 2025. The achievement was particularly notable given the team’s limited resources and first-time participation.
Earlier successes under the same initiative were recorded by Wioso St. Peter’s JHS, the first beneficiary of the Smart Labs project in 2024. After just a few months of training, the school placed fifth at the 2024 Ghana Robotics Competition out of 47 participating schools.
Through partnerships such as the collaboration with the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Foundation, Newmont’s education investments are contributing to inclusive growth by strengthening skills development and expanding opportunities for young people in underserved communities.

Life-saving health support acknowledged
Newmont has also been recognised by Children’s Heart Foundation Ghana for its support toward life-saving surgeries for children with heart conditions. Through the partnership, underprivileged children have gained access to critical open-heart surgeries that would otherwise have been financially out of reach.
Taken together, these interventions reflect a broader approach that goes beyond corporate social responsibility to long-term social impact. While maintaining its focus on responsible mining and environmental stewardship, Newmont continues to channel resources into partnerships that deliver measurable health and education outcomes.
By supporting preventive healthcare, advanced education and life-saving medical interventions, the company is helping to build lasting social value and reinforcing its role as a contributor to Ghana’s development agenda, particularly for vulnerable and underserved populations.
