In an initiative to counter long-held stereotypes in media portrayals of Africa, The AI Shop and Africa No Filter have launched an innovative, AI-powered tool. The Africa Bias Buster is designed to meticulously examine and correct biased language in various forms of text, ensuring that narratives about Africa are fair and accurate.
In a joint statement, the two organisations explained that the tool targets the long-standing issue of stereotypical depictions of Africa in the media. It is capable of scrutinising various text formats, from news articles and blog posts to social media entries, corporate communications, and other written content.
While recent discussions have focused on algorithmic bias in AI, the Africa Bias Buster tackles an even more entrenched problem: the enduring stereotypes that have long misrepresented Africa and its people, as noted by both partners. The tool scans text for both subtle and overt biases, calculates a bias score, and offers actionable recommendations for improvement in real time.
The analysis is powered by an extensive internal database that includes a diverse range of writing samples and documented stereotypes, which together serve as a reference framework. A language model then assesses the content against this framework, delivering a bias score for the text. Currently, the tool supports DOXC, PDF, and TXT file formats.

Aimed at anyone involved in telling stories about Africa, journalists, authors, content creators, writers, podcasters, and filmmakers alike, the tool has already begun to be introduced to storytelling communities, including at a recent Africa Media Festival in Nairobi, Kenya. Future plans include expanding its reach to universities, journalism schools, and other educational institutions.
Ekow Duker, co-founder of the AI Shop, remarked, “We built the Africa Bias Buster to demonstrate how AI can be a positive force for change. By combining our expertise in AI with Africa No Filter’s deep understanding of narrative biases, we have created a tool that offers immediate, practical assistance to anyone writing about Africa.”
Moky Makura, executive director at Africa No Filter, highlighted the collaboration’s potential to further the organisation’s mission of transforming outdated perceptions of the continent. Abimbola Ogundairo, advocacy and campaigns lead at Africa No Filter, added, “The Africa Bias Buster is fully digital and completely free. Our priority is to equip storytellers who are passionate about shifting the African narrative with the skills to do so. The tool is accessible to anyone, whether on the continent or in the diaspora.”
