In a strategic push to stabilize its financial position, the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) has kickstarted an intensive revenue mobilization campaign in Ghana’s Upper East Region—successfully recouping GHS 2.64 million within the first 72 hours.
The operation is part of a broader, month-long campaign targeting the retrieval of over GHS 11 million in outstanding payments from customers, a significant portion of which is owed by public sector institutions, including facilities in the health, education, and security sectors.
Speaking in an interview, NEDCo’s Upper East Regional Manager, Ing. William Asare, emphasized the strategic importance of the drive.

“Timely payment of electricity bills is non-negotiable for operational sustainability. Yet, we are grappling with mounting arrears, which threaten our ability to maintain and expand infrastructure. That is why we’ve mobilized our full workforce from national service personnel to top management to execute this recovery.” He noted.
The campaign, launched earlier this month, is not just about recouping debts. It is a deliberate attempt to reset the payment culture across the region, combining financial enforcement with customer engagement.
As part of the enforcement strategy, NEDCo has commenced disconnection of power supply to customers with substantial arrears who have failed to respond to repeated payment requests.
“Disconnection is always a last resort. We are encouraging all indebted customers to approach our offices to negotiate flexible repayment plans. A good-faith initial payment, coupled with a structured settlement arrangement, is all it takes to avoid service disruption.” Ing. Asare said.
This move comes amid growing pressure on utilities to improve service delivery while maintaining financial viability. In response, NEDCo has begun strategic investments in infrastructure upgrades across the region, aiming to enhance both the reliability and quality of power supply.

“We recognize that efficient service is as important as revenue recovery. Our teams are actively upgrading systems to ensure we can meet demand and customer expectations,” Asare noted.
The Upper East campaign is expected to serve as a model for similar exercises across NEDCo’s operational zones. With over GHS 100 million in arrears regionally, the stakes are high—but so is the company’s resolve.
