Dr. Kwekuche Ackah, a Crop Scientist member of the Manifesto Committee of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been speaking on the party’s vegetable improvement project, designed to tackle the pressing issues in Ghana’s vegetable sector.
Ghana currently struggles with availability, affordability, and safety of vegetables on the market. In recent months, commonly consumed vegetables have dominated the list of 20 items with the highest rate of inflation, significantly higher than the national average in each month.
Dr. Ackah noted that many vegetables sold are deemed unsafe due to unreliable sourcing, prompting more Ghanaians to grow their own food at home. In response, the NDC’s policy aims to ensure a steady supply of safe vegetables across markets nationwide.

A key element of this initiative is the provision of government-owned land in urban areas, which will be repurposed for farming. The plan includes the establishment of greenhouses to support large-scale vegetable production, particularly in high-demand urban centers. The project also emphasizes youth involvement, offering training, resources, and technical support for greenhouse farming.
By focusing on crops such as tomatoes and peppers, the policy seeks to stabilize prices and improve food security. Vegetables produced will be supplied to grocery stores nationwide, helping to ease supply shortages and ensure affordability for consumers, Dr. Ackah explained.
