MTN MoMo Limited has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding customers against digital fraud, as it rewarded mobile money users who transacted via the MTN MoMo application during a three-month promotional campaign.
The event, which recognised top users of the MoMo app, also served as a platform to deepen public awareness on cyber security and safe digital financial practices, particularly during the festive season when fraud cases typically rise.
Speaking in an interview with the media, Mr. Faisal Ali, Channel Development Manager at MTN MoMo Limited, said the company was strengthening efforts to protect customers as it drives the adoption of digital payment platforms.
“As more customers move onto the MoMo app to enjoy convenience and seamless transactions, cyber security remains a top priority for us,” Mr. Ali said.
He explained that the “Mensa Aka” promotion, which ran from September 15 to December 15, was aimed at encouraging customers to transition from the USSD channel to the mobile app, while ensuring that users were educated on how to keep their accounts secure.
According to him, MTN MoMo rewarded its top five users with cash prizes ranging from GH¢10,000 to a grand prize of GH¢100,000, but also used the opportunity to remind customers of the risks associated with sharing sensitive information.
Mr. Ali cautioned customers against divulging their personal identification numbers (PINs) and one-time passwords (OTPs) to unknown callers, stressing that MTN staff would never request such details.
“Customers must protect their accounts by keeping their PINs confidential. Any call requesting your OTP or PIN should be treated as fraudulent,” he warned.
He further clarified that the only official number used by MTN MoMo to contact customers during promotions and service interactions is 0244 300 000, urging the public to report suspicious calls and messages.
Mr. Ali noted that cyber criminals often take advantage of increased transaction volumes during festive periods, making customer vigilance critical.
“The app is not only convenient, but also offers stronger security controls compared to traditional channels,” he said, encouraging customers to download it from the Play Store or App Store.
Mr. Ali assured customers that MTN MoMo would continue to invest in digital security systems and public education to ensure a safe and trusted mobile money ecosystem.
He urged the public to remain alert, transact responsibly, and continue using MTN MoMo as a secure digital payment solution.
