MTN Group has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding Ghana’s digital infrastructure, with planned investments in broadband, fibre connectivity, 5G and digital financial services expected to support business growth and strengthen the country’s digital economy.
Mr Ralph Mupita, President and Chief Executive Officer of MTN Group, said Ghana remained a significant market for the telecommunications group, with its long-term investment outlook unchanged.
“Ghana remains a material operation for the Group, and our confidence in the country’s long-term prospects is unchanged,” he said.
Mr Mupita made the remarks during a working visit to Ghana as MTN Ghana marked 30 years of operations in the country.
He said the group’s investment strategy would focus on mobile broadband, financial networks and digital infrastructure to support the Government’s digital transformation agenda and strengthen Ghana’s digital sovereignty.
The visit included engagements with key government and regulatory stakeholders on investment priorities covering financial inclusion, broadband access and the development of a resilient digital economy.
At a meeting with the Vice President, Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, discussions focused on the role of mobile money and digital platforms in expanding economic opportunities for women, particularly traders, farmers and small business owners.
Greater access to digital financial services could help small businesses participate more actively in the formal economy, conduct transactions more efficiently and access financial products through mobile platforms.
The MTN delegation also met Mr Samuel Nartey George, Minister of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, to discuss investments in home broadband, fibre infrastructure and the rollout of 5G technology.
The discussions highlighted the need to expand high-speed connectivity and improve customer experience as Ghana’s demand for digital services continues to grow.
For businesses, stronger broadband and fibre networks could support the adoption of digital tools, online transactions and other technology-enabled services, although the wider economic benefits would depend on affordability, network reach and reliable access.
Mr Mupita also met Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, where he commended the central bank’s work in consolidating macroeconomic stability.
He reaffirmed MTN’s commitment to supporting a secure, well-governed and inclusive digital payments ecosystem.
“MTN will continue investing in Ghana across connectivity, fintech and digital infrastructure,” he said.
Mr Mupita was accompanied by Mr Stephen Blewett, Chief Executive Officer of MTN Ghana, and Mr Shaibu Haruna, Chief Executive Officer of MobileMoney Fintech Limited.
The renewed commitment comes as Ghana continues to expand digital services across businesses, financial transactions and public service delivery, placing telecommunications infrastructure at the centre of efforts to improve productivity and broaden economic participation.
However, the scale of the benefits will depend on how effectively investment translates into wider network coverage, affordable internet access, reliable digital payments and opportunities for businesses beyond major urban centres.
