A tragic accident claimed the lives of at least 50 people in Niger State, central Nigeria, when a fuel tanker collided with a truck carrying passengers and cattle.
The collision occurred at around 00:30 local time on Sunday, sparking a massive explosion that engulfed both vehicles. The crash took place in the Agaie area, resulting in the deaths of dozens, including the cattle that were aboard the truck.
Emergency teams from the Niger State Emergency Management Agency were dispatched to the scene to recover bodies and manage the aftermath.
The victims were burned beyond recognition, necessitating a mass burial. Eight individuals were also hospitalized with severe injuries, with the state government covering their medical expenses.
Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago expressed his deep sorrow over the incident, urging residents to remain calm and drivers to strictly adhere to road safety regulations.
Fuel tanker explosions and road accidents are, unfortunately, common in Nigeria, often exacerbated by the poor state of the country’s roads.
