The government has inaugurated a 17-member Technical Committee to accelerate the implementation of the Accra Marine Drive Tourism Investment Project, a flagship initiative aimed at transforming the capital’s coastline into a major tourism and economic hub.
Speaking at the inauguration, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, said the Committee would provide technical direction, strengthen coordination among agencies, and help resolve long-standing bottlenecks that have delayed the project.
The Marine Drive project is designed to reposition Accra as a leading cultural and tourism destination by developing a modern waterfront anchored on entertainment, hospitality, and creative industry infrastructure.
It is also expected to stimulate private sector investment, create jobs, and boost Ghana’s broader tourism value chain.
Madam Gomashie acknowledged that the project had faced years of setbacks but noted that renewed government commitment had revived implementation efforts.
She tasked the Committee to work within an 18 to 24-month timeline to fast-track approvals, streamline processes, and ensure steady progress on the ground.
“Your expertise across tourism, finance, urban planning, land administration, legal systems, and utilities will be critical in delivering this project,” she said, urging members to cut through bureaucratic delays and ensure effective interagency collaboration.
The Minister stressed that strong institutional coordination would be essential to unlocking the project’s economic potential, adding that the Ministry remained committed to working closely with the Committee to deliver results.
Chairing the Committee is Yussif Issaka Jajah, Deputy Minister at the Ministry, alongside representatives from key public and private sector institutions.
Agencies represented include the Ghana Tourism Authority, Ghana Tourism Development Company, Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly, Lands Commission, and the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority.
Other stakeholders include the Ghana Water Company Limited, Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Ministry of Finance, Attorney-General’s Department, and the Ghana Telecommunications Chamber.
Private sector participants, including project consultant ABP Consult and contractor Attachy Construction, are also part of the Committee.
The Committee’s mandate includes resolving technical challenges, facilitating implementation, improving communication across institutions, and supporting the digitalisation of approval processes to enhance efficiency.
Mr Jajah, in his remarks, called on members to dedicate their expertise and time to delivering results within the stipulated period.
“If we see visible development at the Marine Drive site, we should be proud to have contributed to this national project,” he said, emphasising the importance of collaboration across agencies.
The acceleration of the Marine Drive project is seen as a critical step in unlocking tourism-led growth in Accra, with expected spillover benefits for hospitality, creative arts, real estate, and small businesses operating along the value chain.
