President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has announced a six-member team to oversee and coordinate national security issues pending substantive appointments.
In a statement, the team will be led by former Minister for the Interior, Prosper Douglas Bani, followed by Lt. General Peter Augustine Blay, a retired Chief of Defence Staff, Kofi Totobi Quakyi, a former Minister for National Security, and Larry Gbevlo-Lartey, a former National Security Coordinator.
Also in the team is Brigadier General (Rtd) Fuseini Iddrissu and Commissioner of Police (Rtd) Nathaniel Kofi Boakye.
The statement said the team’s mandate begins on Tuesday, January 7, 2025.
This interim team is expected to play a pivotal role in ensuring the country’s security landscape remains robust during the transition period. With Ghana facing potential challenges including terrorism, cross-border crime, and evolving cybersecurity threats, the team’s collective expertise will be critical in addressing these concerns.
The National Security Coordinating Team will also liaise with existing agencies to enhance preparedness and maintain a strong security framework.
Furthermore, this appointment signifies Mahama’s recognition of the importance of institutional stability during transitions. By involving experienced individuals, the President-Elect aims to prevent lapses in security operations and foster continuity.
The public and stakeholders alike have expressed optimism about the team’s capacity to uphold Ghana’s security standards during this critical phase.
