President-elect John Dramani Mahama has moved swiftly to fight corruption with the formation of a preparatory team tasked with kickstarting his bold anti-corruption initiative, “Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL)”, aimed at identifying and recovering stolen state resources while holding offenders accountable.
The team, announced as part of Mahama’s transition process, will focus on uncovering suspected acts of corruption, gathering critical information, and setting the stage for swift action when the new administration assumes office. Comprising experts in governance, law, and investigations, the team is led by North-Tongu MP, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, with former Auditor-General Daniel Domelovo, COP (Rtd) Nathaniel Kofi Boakye, private legal practitioner Martin Kpebu and investigative journalist Raymond Archer as members.
This bold move is expected to rebuild investor confidence in Ghana’s economy by sending a clear signal of transparency and accountability. Corruption has long been a stumbling block to economic stability, and addressing it directly offers hope of a business environment that is predictable and fair. Investors are likely to see this as a step toward fostering trust and driving growth.
The initiative also seeks to ensure that looted resources are redirected to critical areas such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure, creating a ripple effect of development that benefits all Ghanaians.
However, some concerns have emerged about the execution of this initiative. Critics have questioned whether the team will operate independently and transparently or risk being perceived as politically motivated.
Others have questioned whether the team will be able to recover significant amounts of misappropriated funds, citing the complexity of tracing and reclaiming stolen assets.
Despite these challenges, the team is engaging stakeholders and the public to build a collective front in the fight against corruption.
