Natural language processing, or NLP, focuses on enabling machines to understand, interpret and generate human language. It is the technology behind chatbots, voice assistants, document analysis tools and machine translation.
NLP systems break down language into components such as words, grammar and context. Early approaches relied on rigid rules, but modern NLP is largely powered by machine learning and deep learning models trained on massive text datasets.

These models learn how words relate to one another, how meaning changes with context, and how sentences are structured. This allows them to summarise reports, analyse sentiment in social media posts, extract key information from contracts, or generate coherent responses to user questions.
Recent advances in large language models have dramatically expanded NLP’s capabilities, enabling more natural interactions and opening new opportunities in customer service, education, journalism and software development.
How they work together to deliver results
In practice, machine learning, deep learning and NLP are rarely used in isolation. A modern AI system often combines all three.
Take an online lending platform. Machine learning models assess credit risk using structured financial data. Deep learning processes alternative data such as transaction histories or mobile usage patterns. NLP analyses customer communications or application documents. Together, these systems deliver faster approvals, lower default rates and improved customer experience.
The results depend on data quality, ethical design and human oversight. Poor data can lead to biased outcomes, while opaque models can undermine trust. As adoption accelerates, organisations are investing not only in technical capability but also in governance, skills and transparency.
