Accra’s Kotoka International Airport (KIA) is set to commence a major two-year runway maintenance project, requiring a six-hour closure of the runway each night from March 30, 2025, to March 30, 2027. The runway will be completely closed from 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM local time daily, impacting overnight flights and requiring adjustments to airline operations.
The maintenance work will involve runway overlay to enhance safety and operational standards. During the closure period, no flights will be allowed to operate within the designated hours, affecting both passenger and cargo services.
The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) formally notified airlines of the maintenance project in a letter dated October 23, 2024, signed by Managing Director Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare. The GACL assured the aviation industry of further details, including a comprehensive schedule and key contact personnel for coordination.

Key airlines operating overnight flights, including Royal Air Maroc, Turkish Airlines, Allied Air Cargo, and Ethiopian Airlines, will need to recalibrate their schedules and make operational adjustments to minimize disruptions. This could include rescheduling flights, altering routes, or implementing temporary service changes.
The runway overlay project is part of ongoing efforts to modernize infrastructure and ensure high safety standards at KIA. This maintenance will contribute to the long-term reliability and efficiency of airport operations. Passengers flying with impacted airlines should anticipate potential changes to flight schedules and timing adjustments. Airlines are expected to communicate any changes promptly to minimize inconvenience.
