The G20 Foreign Ministers gathered for a landmark meeting at the United Nations Headquarters, the first time the group has convened at the UN with participation extended to all 193 member states.
Held on September 25 in the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) chamber, the meeting centred on pressing issues such as global governance reform, hunger, poverty, and sustainable development.
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, emphasized the gravity of food insecurity during the event, stating, “It is shameful that in our world of plenty, around one person in ten regularly goes without food for an entire day or more, known as severe food insecurity.”
He emphasized the need for immediate action, commending Brazil’s emphasis on combating global hunger during its G20 presidency. Guterres called upon all G20 nations, as well as all UN Member States, to intensify their efforts to address this critical challenge to human dignity.
The meeting not only marked a great diplomatic milestone but also accentuated the collective responsibility of the world’s largest economies to confront global crises. With the growing prevalence of hunger and poverty, the dialogue among G20 ministers is seen as vital for coordinating international responses and strategies.
Discussions within the ECOSOC chamber reflected the urgent need for collaborative solutions, particularly as the impacts of climate change and economic instability continue to intensify existing vulnerabilities.
The commitment to addressing severe food insecurity and fostering sustainable development remains crucial in the pursuit of a more equitable future for all. The convergence of these nations is a confirmation of the shared commitment to not only recognize these issues but to actively work towards effective resolutions.
