Harris quickly chose Walz after President Joe Biden exited the race, opting against other potential candidates like Governor Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Senator Mark Kelly of Arizona. Walz, known for his military and congressional experience, will help Harris strengthen the Democratic coalition and appeal to independent voters.
Polls indicate a tight race, with Harris slightly leading Trump in key battleground states, according to a July Bloomberg News/Morning Consult survey. Walz’s background includes serving in the Army National Guard, teaching, and representing Minnesota in Congress, where he focused on military, veterans, and agricultural issues. His moderate stance on gun rights evolved after the 2018 Parkland school shooting, now supporting stricter measures like universal background checks and an assault weapons ban.
As governor, Walz faced the aftermath of George Floyd’s murder in 2020, implementing police reforms after initial criticism of his response. Progressives and labor leaders support Walz for his policies as governor, such as free school lunches and expanded paid leave, which Democrats hope will resonate with voters concerned about economic issues.
