The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has directed the withholding of July 2024 salaries for all teaching staff members of the Colleges of Education (CETAG) due to their ongoing strike, which began on June 14, 2024.
The directive, issued on July 22, 2024, and signed by Nicholas Ameyaw, Head of IPPD, on behalf of Prof. Ahmed Jinapor Abdulai, was addressed to the Controller & Accountant General’s Department. It stated that CETAG members’ refusal to heed the Minister of Education’s calls to end the strike as the reason for withholding their salaries. Consequently, the letter instructed the suspension of salary payments for all teaching staff, except for College Principals.
The letter clearly states, “By this letter, College Principals are not to validate the July 2024 salaries of all teaching staff. We count on your usual cooperation.”
This salary suspension aims to pressure CETAG members to end the strike, which has disrupted academic activities across 46 colleges of education. The strike was initiated due to delayed government responses in implementing the National Labour Commission (NLC) Arbitral Award and negotiated conditions.
CETAG, however, remains firm in its stance, pledging to continue the strike indefinitely if the negotiated service conditions and arbitral awards are not implemented. The group has also accused the NLC of spreading misinformation about their actions.
