The Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) has partnered with Wanderlust Ghana to launch an ambitious 30,000-kilometre overland expedition. The journey will be undertaken by the Wanderlust Ghana Expedition Club (WEC), a renowned adventure group. The expedition aims to promote tourism and put Ghana on the global map as a top destination, aligning with the GTA’s broader strategy to attract international tourists.
The expedition team, consisting of six members and three vehicles, will pass through 31 countries over the course of two months, beginning on September 30, 2024. The route will take the adventurers through West Africa, North Africa, Europe, and back through the Middle East, East Africa, and Southern Africa, before returning to Ghana. The journey includes stops in Côte d’Ivoire, Morocco, Spain, France, Turkey, Kenya, South Africa, and more.

At the official launch in Accra, Akwasi Agyeman, CEO of the GTA, described the expedition as a bold and “crazy” venture achievable only by individuals with exceptional adventurous spirits. He expressed his excitement for the partnership, emphasizing its significance in positioning Ghana as a global tourism hotspot. “This partnership is invaluable to the GTA because it places Ghana firmly as a top tourism destination globally. We hope to see more tourists visiting Ghana, especially for our ‘December in GH’ events,” Agyeman said.
Agyeman also highlighted the potential of the adventure to showcase Ghana’s culture, history, and investment opportunities, adding that the initiative is expected to contribute to the nation’s tourism growth by attracting international visitors. The expedition aligns with GTA’s mission to support ventures that position Africa as a leading hub for tourism and business.

Wanderlust Ghana’s leader, Kwabena Peprah, expressed his gratitude to the GTA and other partners for making the expedition possible. He reflected on the group’s previous 10,000-kilometre journey from Accra to the UK, which caught global attention and opened doors for partnerships. “Our first trip wasn’t about fame or publicity; we simply enjoyed exploring different parts of the world while putting Ghana on the map as a tourist destination,” Peprah said.
While excited about the upcoming journey, Peprah acknowledged potential challenges, particularly vehicle issues that could delay the trip. However, the team remains optimistic, aiming to make Ghana a prime destination for international tourists.

The previous Accra-to-London trip caught the interest of the GTA, leading to the current collaboration. The GTA approached Wanderlust Ghana after their return, expressing interest in future partnerships to further promote Ghana on the global stage.
As the team prepares to embark on this extensive journey, the collaboration marks a new chapter in Ghana’s tourism strategy, with the potential to bring increased global attention and investment to the country.
