The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) has announced that its Managing Director, Ms. Abena Amoah, has been elected to the Board of the International Capital Market Association (ICMA), becoming the first West African to serve in this high-profile role. The development marks a historic step for Ghana and the sub-region, signaling growing global recognition of West Africa’s evolving capital markets.
Ms. Amoah brings over 25 years of experience in capital markets, investment banking, and financial regulation to the ICMA Board. Her leadership has been instrumental in driving key reforms at the GSE, including the introduction of new market segments, digital trading infrastructure, and efforts to deepen local investor participation.
Prior to joining the GSE as its first female Managing Director, Ms. Amoah held senior roles across Ghana’s investment landscape, including at Renaissance Capital, NewWorld Renaissance Securities, and Strategic African Securities. Her track record includes pioneering equity and debt transactions that have helped expand corporate access to long-term capital in Ghana and beyond.
“I am honoured to join the ICMA Board and to have the opportunity to contribute to the ongoing development of global capital markets,” Ms. Amoah said. “This election reflects the progress we are making in Ghana and West Africa, and I look forward to bringing our unique perspectives and aspirations to the table.”
Her election underscores ICMA’s growing focus on integrating voices from emerging and frontier markets in its mission to support efficient, well-functioning, and sustainable capital markets worldwide. As a board member, Ms. Amoah is expected to offer valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities facing African markets, particularly in areas such as market transparency, fixed-income development, and regulatory harmonization.
The GSE in a statement described the appointment as a “landmark achievement” that reflects both the institutional credibility of the Exchange and Ms. Amoah’s influence in shaping modern capital markets across the continent.
The ICMA Board includes top executives from leading global capital market institutions and provides strategic direction for policy, advocacy, and best practices across the industry.
