The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) will interrupt power supply to some parts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday, August 16, 2026, to facilitate emergency works on a damaged transmission tower at Ashaiman.
The planned outage, scheduled from 3:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., is required to enable GRIDCo engineers and technical teams to replace the damaged tower on the 161kV Tema–Achimota transmission line and restore the integrity of the transmission system.
According to GRIDCo, the tower was damaged after a fuel tanker exploded while welding work was being undertaken on its tank within the transmission line’s Right-of-Way (RoW).
The company said the emergency intervention was necessary to ensure the safety of personnel and the public while completing the replacement works.
“GRIDCo engineers and technical teams will use this period to safely undertake the required works and restore the integrity of the transmission line,” the company said.
The incident has also prompted a renewed warning from the power transmission company over activities carried out within legally protected transmission corridors.
GRIDCo said encroachment on a lawfully acquired or assigned transmission line Right-of-Way is prohibited under Ghanaian law, citing the Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004.
“The Transmission Line Protection Regulations, 1967 (L.I. 542), as amended by L.I. 1737 of 2004, prohibit specified human activities within transmission line corridors. Activities including unauthorised construction, excavation, drilling, commercial operations, lorry parks, shops, garages and other activities that interfere with the safe operation and maintenance of the transmission system are prohibited within the protected corridor,” GRIDCo stated.
The company said the directive formed part of broader efforts to protect the country’s transmission infrastructure and prevent activities that could compromise the safety and reliability of electricity supply.
It further disclosed that the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, had directed persons and businesses encroaching on transmission line Rights-of-Way across the country to cease unauthorised activities and vacate the affected corridors within one month.
The directive covers persons who have erected structures, established businesses, parked heavy vehicles, undertaken welding, excavation, or other industrial activities, or otherwise occupied or obstructed transmission line corridors.
“All persons, businesses, land users, and other entities currently encroaching on its transmission line Rights-of-Way across the country must cease all unauthorised activities and vacate the affected corridors within the one-month period,” GRIDCo said.
The company warned that enforcement action would follow the expiry of the one-month period for those who fail to comply with the directive.
