The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has commenced restoration of power supply following a major fault on the Akosombo-Volta transmission line that disrupted electricity supply to parts of the country on Thursday, August 20, 2026.
The incident occurred at approximately 4:30 a.m., triggering the automatic shutdown of the Akosombo generating units and some thermal power plants.
GRIDCo said the automatic tripping was activated as part of the power system’s protection mechanisms to safeguard the integrity and stability of the National Interconnected Transmission System.
In a statement issued in Tema, GRIDCo explained that the disturbance resulted in the loss of power supply to some parts of the country, but said its technical teams moved immediately to contain the fault and begin the restoration process.
According to the transmission utility, engineers, working in coordination with other power sector agencies, first isolated the affected transmission line before commencing a controlled restoration of the national power system.
“Immediately following the incident, GRIDCo engineers, working in close coordination with other power sector agencies, took steps to isolate the affected transmission line and commenced the safe and systematic restoration of the power system.”
GRIDCo said power supply had already been restored to some affected areas as of the release of its statement, with restoration efforts continuing across the remaining affected areas.
The company said the restoration process was being undertaken systematically to ensure that electricity supply was returned safely while protecting the stability of the transmission network.
GRIDCo also assured electricity consumers that its relevant technical teams had been fully mobilised to address the disruption and complete the restoration of supply.
“GRIDCo will continue to provide updates as further information becomes available and appreciates the patience, understanding and cooperation of the public as restoration efforts continue.”
The restoration exercise remains ongoing as GRIDCo and other power sector agencies work to stabilise the system and restore supply to the remaining affected areas.
