The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has completed the installation of a new Vessel Traffic Management Information System to improve the monitoring of ships navigating Ghanaian waters.
According to Justice Amosonviri Akodia, GPHA’s Corporate IT Manager, the system is set to go live within days and will provide extended surveillance across the port and waterfront, reducing human error and delays at port entry points.
“This system will help us track all vessels more efficiently and safely,” Akodia said in an interview with Eye on Port.
To further improve security and operations, GPHA has implemented several digital tools, including CCTV cameras across the port, drone surveillance, and upgraded gate automation systems to streamline vehicle and cargo checks.
Access control systems have also been introduced to restrict unauthorized entry into sensitive zones.
In terms of environmental monitoring, GPHA has deployed F-SENSE air quality equipment at two port locations to measure pollution levels, supporting Ghana’s broader sustainability goals.
The Authority has also upgraded its health services with a new Hospital Management System (HMS), allowing staff and users to receive faster medical care without relying on paper records.
For cyber safety, GPHA has introduced multi-factor authentication and mandatory Acceptable Use Policy agreements for new staff. Employees have also been trained to identify threats such as phishing and malware.
Additionally, GPHA has invested in modern fire detection and suppression systems to prevent electrical fires, a key part of safety in the increasingly digitalized port environment.
