The Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs has directed metropolitan, municipal, and district assemblies to pay five months of outstanding allowances to assembly members, covering August to December 2025.
The ministry confirmed that the funds have been transferred through the Bank of Ghana to the accounts of the respective assemblies, and urged chief executives to expedite disbursement.
Subsequent payments, it said, will depend on timely reporting of the completed payments through Regional Coordinating Councils.
“The outstanding allowances have been released, and we expect prompt action from all assemblies,” said Amin Abdul-Rahman, Chief Director at the ministry. “Future payments will hinge on proper reporting and compliance.”
Regional ministers have been instructed to ensure all assemblies in their jurisdictions comply, reflecting the government’s push for accountability in public payments.
Assembly members had faced months of delays, with unpaid allowances prompting concerns over remuneration for elected officials.
The ministry said the directive is intended to streamline payment processes and reinforce financial reporting across local government structures.
