President John Dramani Mahama has announced, during a media encounter, that the government has approved the declaration of commerciality (DoC) for the Eban-Akoma oil and gas discoveries. The approval, he said, “paves the way for increased production, jobs, and energy security.”
Speaking directly to the press, Mahama explained that the declaration allows the Joint Venture partners, Eni Ghana Exploration & Production Ltd, Vitol Upstream Tano Ltd, Woodfields Upstream Ghana Ltd, and GNPC Exploration & Production Company Ltd (Explorco) together with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), to prepare a full Plan of Development (PoD) for the fields.
“This milestone brings us closer to increased oil and gas production, job creation and enhanced energy security, reinforcing our commitment to responsible resource management for the benefit of all Ghanaians,” Mahama added.
He further noted that the development of Eban-Akoma is expected to complement ongoing government initiatives to strengthen Ghana’s energy sector, including the construction of the second gas processing plant (GPP-2), which will double national processing capacity, reduce reliance on expensive imported fuels, and enable cheaper, cleaner, and more reliable power generation.
The President highlighted the wider economic benefits, emphasizing that the discoveries will support industrial growth, generate both direct and indirect employment, and enhance energy security for households and businesses. “This is part of our deliberate strategy to ensure that Ghana’s natural resources contribute meaningfully to national development and shared prosperity,” Mahama said.
The declaration of commerciality for Eban-Akoma also reinforces Ghana’s position as a growing energy hub in West Africa, creating opportunities for local content development, investment in oilfield services, and the expansion of related infrastructure.
