The government is set to unveil its highly anticipated 5G services today November 1, 2024, marking a major leap in Ghana’s digital connectivity and promising faster internet speeds and improved network reliability for users nationwide.
The event will be held at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, where President Akufo-Addo is expected to announce this initiative to boost internet connectivity and speed across the nation.
5G, or Fifth Generation wireless technology, represents the latest breakthrough in mobile network connectivity, promising ultra-fast internet speeds, lower latency, and improved bandwidth.
It’s a powerful reimagining of network capabilities, poised to elevate Ghana’s connectivity to unprecedented heights. With ultra-fast speeds, significantly lower latency, and enhanced bandwidth, 5G enables seamless, real-time experiences that go beyond today’s capabilities, providing the infrastructure needed to support the next generation of innovation.

Imagine downloading high-definition movies in seconds, or cities equipped with smart technology that communicates instantly to enhance urban life. 5G promises a world where remote medical consultations feel just as real-time as in-person visits and where education, business, and communication tools operate without the buffering or lag that we’ve come to accept as normal. The robust connectivity of 5G supports everything from immersive gaming and augmented reality experiences to precision agriculture and advanced manufacturing processes.
What’s at stake here is more than speed; it’s the ability to drive advancements in areas critical to Ghana’s growth. In healthcare, 5G allows for remote diagnostics and telemedicine applications, bringing quality care closer to communities that need it most.
In education, students gain access to virtual classrooms with seamless video quality, interactive applications, and resources that are accessible without interruption. Businesses across sectors will benefit from reduced operational delays, fostering greater productivity and global competitiveness.
Ghana’s journey to 5G began under the guidance of the Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, with a bold vision: to make high-speed internet accessible and affordable across the country. In May 2024, the government partnered with seven major industry players to develop a shared 5G infrastructure, culminating in the creation of the Next-Gen Infrastructure Company (NGIC).
This entity, awarded the country’s first 5G license, brings together Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, AT Ghana, and Telecel Ghana, each playing a vital role in shaping the future of connectivity in Ghana.
With this initiative, Ghana stands ready to unlock new levels of connectivity, empowering its citizens and businesses alike to fully participate in an increasingly digital world.
