Gospel musician Sonnie Badu has expressed his views on the ongoing debate surrounding the construction of the National Cathedral in Ghana. While acknowledging the project’s potential benefits, he emphasized that the cathedral’s conception as a personal vow by President Nana Akufo-Addo has contributed to the controversy.
Sonnie Badu believes that a collective vow would have garnered broader support and minimized criticisms. He cited biblical examples where individuals fulfilled their vows to God. However, he also acknowledged that the decision to build the cathedral is ultimately a personal matter between the president and God.

Despite the controversies, Sonnie Badu sees the National Cathedral as a positive initiative that could promote national unity and social cohesion. In an interview with Takoradi-based Empire FM, he emphasized its potential to serve as a sacred space for the nation and a unifying symbol.
The project, however, has faced significant challenges, including funding shortages, scandals, and public criticism. Some argue that the government’s priorities should be focused on addressing the country’s economic difficulties rather than constructing a costly cathedral.
