Walk through Tarkwa or Damang today, and the changes don’t shout, they speak. In smoother roads that shorten journeys. In thriving schools filled with possibility. In clean water flowing where it once didn’t. In health facilities that simply weren’t there two decades ago.
These aren’t accidents of time. They are the result of nearly US$110 million invested over 20 years by the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, a sustained commitment quietly reshaping lives in the communities surrounding its mines.
Since 2004, the Foundation has focused on what truly endures: infrastructure, education, enterprise, health, skills training, and sustainable livelihoods. More than US$74 million has gone into roads, water systems, schools, and health facilities serving over 19 communities. Nearly US$11 million has strengthened education initiatives, opening doors for young people to build confidence, competence, and ambition.
Enterprise development and agricultural support, backed by US$7.29 million, have helped local businesses grow and farmers increase productivity, turning potential into income and ideas into opportunity.
But beyond the figures lies something deeper.
It is the student walking into a modernized classroom believing in a bigger future.
It is the young farmer applying improved cocoa techniques and seeing stronger yields.
It is the entrepreneur launching a small venture with new skills and renewed confidence.
Health, wellbeing, and training programmes, supported by more than US$9 million, have strengthened community resilience, proving that meaningful development is rarely rushed. It is cultivated.
Even sports, arts, and environmental conservation have not been overlooked, a reminder that true community growth is holistic. It touches the body, the mind, the economy, and the environment.
the hithFor two decades, the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation has demonstrated that responsible mining can coexist with responsible development. That resource extraction can move in step with social upliftment. That long-term vision matters.
It isn’t only gold being mined here. It’s confidence.
It’s the future that is being shaped.
