The Ghana Industrial Trawlers Association (GITA) has welcomed the government’s decision to reinstate the fishing licences of four industrial trawling vessels, describing the move as a sign of “regulatory fairness” and a constructive approach to stakeholder engagement.
In a statement issued, the Association said the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture’s decision, communicated through a press release dated April 2, had helped restore confidence among operators in the industrial fishing space.
The vessels affected by the reinstatement are MV Long Xiang 607, MV Long Xiang 608, MV Meng Xin 10 and MV Florence 2.
GITA said the development reinforces the value of “dialogue and due process” in the administration of fisheries governance, while also signalling what it called a more “transparent and structured regulatory framework” for the sector.
According to the Association, the decision provides assurance to industry players that enforcement actions can be pursued within a framework that balances compliance obligations with administrative fairness.
It further noted that the reinstatement reflects a “balanced approach to enforcement,” which it said is necessary for maintaining stability in the fishing industry while supporting the broader sustainability objectives of the sector.
The Association also used the occasion to reaffirm its commitment to full compliance with fisheries regulations, pledging to continue working with the Ministry and other relevant state institutions to strengthen oversight and improve operational standards.
GITA said it remains committed to supporting initiatives aimed at “strengthening governance,” improving monitoring systems and promoting responsible fishing practices across the industrial trawling segment.
It added that stronger collaboration between regulators and operators would be critical to sustaining reforms in the sector, improving accountability and ensuring the long-term management of marine resources.
The Association said such engagement would be essential not only for responsible resource use, but also for preserving the contribution of the fisheries sector to jobs, food supply and economic activity.
GITA also extended Easter goodwill to the Minister and staff of the Ministry, wishing them renewed strength and wisdom in the discharge of their responsibilities.
The reinstatement is expected to ease tensions within the industrial fisheries space and may help reinforce trust between regulators and licensed operators at a time when Ghana continues to face pressure to improve fisheries governance, strengthen enforcement credibility and safeguard marine resources.
