Ghana’s visual communications and printing industry is entering a new phase of growth, driven by expanding retail activity, urban development, and rising demand for high-impact branding and advertising solutions.
Estimates indicate that Ghana’s retail market, valued at about US$32 billion in 2023, is projected to grow to US$54 billion by 2031 (https://apo-opa.co/4uK1j95), reflecting rising consumer spending and rapid commercial expansion across the country.
Outdoor advertising has also emerged as a major driver of demand for printing services, generating roughly US$60 million annually and accounting for more than 20 percent of total advertising expenditure ( https://apo-opa.co/3P5PERC). The segment relies heavily on large-format printing for billboards, retail displays and event branding.
As brands compete for visibility across storefronts, malls, events and public spaces, print service providers are investing in modern production technologies capable of delivering faster turnaround times, versatile applications and durable outputs suited to West Africa’s climate.
Among companies responding to this demand is Chroma Digital Solutions, an Accra-based visual communications firm that has upgraded its production capacity with the installation of the Canon Colorado M5W wide-format printer.
The installation represents one of the earliest deployments of the technology in Africa and is expected to strengthen the company’s ability to produce premium retail displays, interior décor graphics and high-durability outdoor signage.
Operations Manager at Chroma Digital Solutions, Kwame Owusu-Kwarteng, said businesses increasingly expect speed, consistency and the flexibility to produce different types of graphics on a single platform.
According to him, the printer’s UVgel technology produces prints that withstand intense heat and sunlight, while features such as white ink capability, combined matte and gloss finishes and texture printing allow the company to offer premium applications that were previously difficult to produce locally.
He added that the system’s high productivity and efficient ink usage also help control production costs, an important factor in Ghana’s price-sensitive business environment.
At the regional level, Canon Central and North Africa says Ghana’s evolving economy is pushing print businesses to move beyond basic production toward value-added services that support branding, retail experiences and architectural design.
Business Unit Director for B2B at Canon Central and North Africa, Tushar Vashnavi, described Ghana as one of West Africa’s most dynamic visual communications markets.
He explained that as retail, infrastructure and advertising sectors expand, print companies are investing in technologies that allow them to diversify their services, respond faster to customers and operate more profitably.
Industry players also emphasise the importance of reliable technical support and business guidance to ensure successful technology adoption and sustainable growth in emerging markets.
For Chroma Digital Solutions, investing in advanced production systems has already opened new business opportunities and strengthened operational reliability.
Company officials say dependable technical support allows them to pursue more complex projects while delivering greater value to clients.
As Ghana’s economy continues to diversify, demand for high-quality visual communication is expected to rise across sectors such as retail, real estate, events and corporate branding, placing technologically advanced print providers at the centre of the industry’s next phase of growth.
