Ghana is set to enter the global lithium market with the recent approval of the Mine Operating Permit for Atlantic Lithium’s flagship Ewoyaa Lithium Project.
In a release on October 8, 2024, Atlantic Lithium, an Africa-focused lithium exploration and development company, confirmed that the Minerals Commission of Ghana had granted the company the necessary permit, completing the final regulatory requirement for the project to start construction of the Ewoyaa Lithium Mine and Processing Plant.
This approval is the last step in the permitting process, bringing the company closer to its goal of producing lithium in Ghana. This development aligns with Ghana’s broader strategy to leverage the global shift towards electric vehicles, positioning the country as a key player in the expanding electric vehicle industry.

According to Neil Herbert, Executive Chairman of Atlantic Lithium, this permit represents a critical milestone in the company’s journey to first production. The next key step for the company is parliamentary ratification of the Ewoyaa Mining Lease, which is expected to be discussed when Parliament resumes on October 15, 2024.
Herbert is optimistic that this approval will be secured, paving the way for the construction and operation of what could be a globally significant lithium project.
“Representing the final regulatory approval required by the Company before we can commence construction, the issuance of the Mine Operating Permit marks a critical milestone in the permitting process for the Ewoyaa Lithium Project.,” he stated.
The Ewoyaa Project, located in Ghana’s Central Region, has already shown great potential. With an expected production of 3.6 million tonnes of spodumene concentrate over a 12-year mine life, it is set to be one of the world’s largest spodumene concentrate mines.
This output positions Ghana as a key player in the supply of lithium, a mineral that is crucial for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy technologies.

For Ghana, this project marks not only a major boost to the mining sector but also an important step in the country’s economic growth. The Ewoyaa Lithium Project, developed under an earn-in agreement with Piedmont Lithium Inc., will bring investment and also open up opportunities for jobs and development in the surrounding regions.
As the global focus shifts toward greener energy, the demand for lithium has been skyrocketing. Lithium is essential for electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy storage, making it a critical resource in the fight against climate change. This mine could position Ghana on the global stage as a reliable supplier of this crucial mineral.
