Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, Ghana’s Education Minister, has announced the launch of the country’s first online high school, set to commence in the next academic year. This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to transform the education system through the Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schooling.
Dr. Adutwum explained that the online school would be accessible to everyone, including those unable to attend traditional schools. “The online school will be operated by the Centre for Distance Learning and Open Schooling, which is a government initiative to increase access to education,” he said.
As part of this educational transformation, the Ministry of Education plans to launch an educational television station next month to support the online school. This station will provide additional resources and learning opportunities for students across the country.
Discussing the digitalization of education, Dr. Adutwum mentioned that the government is distributing free tablets to senior high school students to facilitate digital learning. This move aims to ensure that students have the tools they need to access online educational content effectively.
Additionally, the government is prioritizing Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education with initiatives such as the Ghana Smart Schools Programme and investments in STEM school infrastructure. These efforts are designed to enhance students’ skills in critical areas and prepare them for the future job market.
