Ghana is actively seeking investment and growth opportunities in its fisheries sector, as part of efforts to strengthen the industry’s contribution to the economy.
This was the focus of a high-level meeting in Accra between the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, Emelia Arthur, and Rosie Glazebrook, CEO of the Commonwealth Enterprise and Investment Council (CWEIC).
The discussions, attended by key stakeholders including Dr. John Apea, Commonwealth Head of Mission, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, MP for Amenfi Central, Klaus Büttner, Representative of the Government of Alberta, Canada, and Benjamin Cobblah, Ghana Country Director of the Commonwealth, explored strategies to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and enhance sustainability in Ghana’s fisheries sector.

Minister Arthur highlighted the industry’s growth potential, despite challenges such as overfishing, illegal fishing practices, limited funding, and inadequate data collection. She reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing reforms that will drive sustainability, modernize fishing practices, and position the sector as a key player in the global seafood market.
Glazebrook emphasized CWEIC’s role in fostering business partnerships across the Commonwealth and facilitating investment opportunities in Ghana. She noted that strengthening business-to-business and government-to-business collaboration will be essential in addressing sectoral challenges and unlocking the full economic potential of fisheries.
The meeting underscored the importance of data-driven policies, sustainable fishing practices, and targeted investments in revitalizing the industry. It also reinforced the Commonwealth’s commitment to economic development and trade expansion, with fisheries identified as a priority sector for job creation and long-term investment.
