Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMC) says it is targeting a production output of 700,000 tonnes of manganese in August this year, following improved weather conditions and the deployment of new heavy-duty equipment.
The company said the projected output marked a significant operational milestone and would contribute towards achieving its annual production target of eight million tonnes.
A statement signed by Mr Sun Yuanwei, Group Deputy Manager of GMC, said the expected increase in production was largely due to a reduction in rainfall and recent investments in heavy equipment.
The statement noted that GMC, Ghana’s only manganese mining and exporting company, operates the Nsuta Open Pit Mine in the Western Region.
It explained that seasonal rains had adversely affected haulage and mineral processing activities, resulting in lower manganese shipments between May and July this year due to temporary wet-season disruptions.
Despite the challenges, the company said it remained committed to maintaining its position as a low-cost producer through operational efficiency and innovation.
Mr Sun said, beyond supplying manganese ore to the global steel industry, the company’s high-grade manganese ore was increasingly being recognised as a strategic raw material for the growing new-energy battery industry.
He said GMC remained committed to ensuring stable supplies to international markets while supporting the Government’s value-addition agenda, including plans to establish a manganese refinery to enhance local economic benefits.
The statement expressed optimism about the company’s operational performance in the second half of the year.
It said GMC would continue to monitor weather conditions and maximise the use of its newly acquired high-efficiency equipment to ensure it achieved its full-year production target.
