Ghana is losing its forests faster than they can recover, about 24,800 hectares every year, the equivalent of clearing an area the size of Edinburgh annually. A new study by WaterAid and Tree Aid says this steady loss is quietly putting the country’s water systems and millions of livelihoods at risk.
The report, titled “From Roots to Rivers: How Deforestation Impacts Freshwater Access,” draws on twelve years of satellite data between 2013 and 2025 to understand how vegetation loss affects water resources across West Africa. For Ghana, the findings are clear: as forests disappear, rivers and streams are losing their ability to stay clean and stable.
Between 2013 and 2025, Ghana lost an estimated 298,000 hectares of vegetation, mostly through agricultural expansion, illegal logging, mining, and bushfires. Forests that once shielded water sources and helped regulate rainfall are being stripped away, leaving the land more exposed to erosion and pollution.
The research points out that while Ghana still receives a good amount of rainfall, that doesn’t mean the country’s water situation is improving. In fact, it may be hiding a growing crisis. Recent increases in rainfall linked to climate change have made some rivers and reservoirs appear fuller, but this is misleading. The report warns that these short-term gains disguise deeper problems, erratic rainfall, poor soil absorption, and fast runoff during storms.
When trees are cut down, less water seeps into the ground to refill streams and wells. Heavy rains now rush over bare soil, carrying mud and waste into rivers that once ran clear. As a result, water quality is dropping, and people in many communities have to go farther for clean water or spend more to treat what they can find.
The situation is similar across the region. In Niger and Nigeria, the study found that losing 1,000 hectares of forest leads to an average of 9.25 hectares of surface water loss. While Niger has started restoring parts of its land, adding about 101,000 hectares of vegetation, Ghana continues to lose trees at a worrying pace.
In many parts of the country, the effects are already visible. Rivers that once flowed year-round are drying up faster in the dry season. Water bodies that once served villages for generations are now brown with sediment after every heavy rain. Farmers are noticing the difference, unpredictable rains, dried-up streams, and soil that doesn’t hold moisture like it used to.
The report urges Ghana to see forests and water as part of one system. Protecting trees, it says, is not just an environmental issue but a practical way to secure safe drinking water and protect food production.
If Ghana continues losing nearly 25,000 hectares of forest each year, the cost will go far beyond trees. It will mean dirtier water, weaker soils, and greater hardship for the people who depend on them every day.
