Dr. Prince Hamid Armah, the Deputy Minister for Roads and Highways, has officially launched Ghana’s Roadmap to mitigate emissions and address the environmental challenges associated with the construction industry.
The launch held in Accra, is a significant step in Ghana’s commitment to sustainable development and aligns with global efforts to create more eco-friendly construction practices.
The Minister underscored the roadmap builds upon the ‘Transforming the Built Environment through Sustainable Materials’ programme, which was initiated in November 2023. This program, supported by UN-Habitat, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), seeks to encourage the use of sustainable materials and reduce the carbon footprint of construction projects.

The roadmap outlines strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions within Ghana’s construction sector, which has been a significant contributor to environmental degradation. It promotes the adoption of eco-friendly construction materials, energy-efficient methods, and green building standards that are less harmful to the environment.
Dr. Armah emphasized the importance of incorporating sustainable materials into the construction process. The roadmap advocates for the use of recycled materials, locally sourced alternatives, and renewable resources to minimize waste and reduce the overall environmental impact of infrastructure development.
With support from UN-Habitat, UNEP, and UNOPS, Ghana aims to leverage international expertise and resources to implement the roadmap successfully.
