With the global demand for remote digital services at an all-time high, Ghana is positioning itself to become Africa’s next major player in the business process outsourcing (BPO) sector.
At the launch of the One Million Coders program in Accra on April 16, 2025, at the Kofi Annan ICT Centre in Accra, President John Dramani Mahama highlighted the country’s potential to lead the BPO market in Africa. He noted that Ghana is poised to become the continent’s premier outsourcing hub due to its unique advantages.

In his address, President Mahama pointed to Ghana’s strategic location along the Greenwich Meridian, its English-speaking population, and the growing tech-savvy youth demographic as key factors that make the country an attractive destination for BPO investments.
These strengths, paired with initiatives like the One Million Coders program, position Ghana to capture a share of the global BPO market, especially in areas like software development, data management, and customer support.
The President underscored that digital skills developed through programs like One Million Coders offer more than just technical expertise. “These are not just technical abilities, they are economic passports,” he said, explaining that such skills open doors to better job prospects, entrepreneurial opportunities, and long-term social and economic inclusion. The One Million Coders program, therefore, is not only about skill acquisition but also about empowering Ghanaian youth to access global opportunities.

Pointing to the success stories of countries like India and the Philippines, which have thrived as BPO hubs, President Mahama emphasized that Ghana can achieve similar success with the right investments in education, infrastructure, and training. He stated that nations which recognize the importance of digital literacy early are better positioned for growth. By following a similar path, Ghana could establish itself as a BPO leader in Africa, attracting international business and creating sustainable opportunities for its youth.
This vision forms part of Ghana’s broader strategy to drive its digital economy forward. As President Mahama puts it: “We are laying a foundation for a new economy,” one that is driven by innovation and digital skills.
Through initiatives like One Million Coders, the government says it’s preparing Ghana to become a digital powerhouse, unlocking opportunities for job creation, entrepreneurship, and long-term prosperity.
