The new Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, His Excellency Tong Defa, paid a courtesy call to the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel A. Jinapor, on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.
During the meeting, both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening Ghana-China relations, with discussions focusing on China’s significant role in the mining sector and the planned construction of an airport in Bolgatanga. This ambitious project, tied to China’s ongoing investments, is set to further enhance regional development in northern Ghana.
Minister Jinapor welcomed Ambassador Defa’s visit, noting that the relationship between Ghana and China has been fruitful since Ghana’s independence, particularly in sectors like mining and infrastructure. He emphasized that Chinese involvement in projects like Shandong Gold and Cardinal Namdini demonstrates the robust partnership between the two nations. The Minister expressed optimism about the upcoming Bolgatanga airport, describing it as a significant step in boosting the country’s infrastructure and economic growth.

Ambassador Tong Defa, in his remarks, highlighted the enduring friendship between the two countries and reaffirmed China’s commitment to Ghana’s development. He stressed that his mission would build upon the work of his predecessors, ensuring continuity in China’s collaborative efforts in key areas, particularly in infrastructure and the responsible management of natural resources.
The Minister also acknowledged the crucial role Chinese companies play in Ghana’s mining industry. With major projects like Shandong Gold and Cardinal Namdini, which is set to become the third-largest mining company in the country, China’s contribution to Ghana’s economy remains significant. The Bolgatanga airport project was stressed as part of these efforts to enhance development in the Upper East Region.
Jinapor further assured the Ambassador that the Ministry will continue to work closely with Chinese companies, ensuring that their operations align with Ghanaian laws and environmental sustainability standards. The Minister expressed confidence in China’s ongoing contribution to the responsible exploitation of the country’s mineral resources.
Ambassador Defa conveyed his appreciation for the warm reception and expressed his dedication to bolstering the bilateral relationship. He emphasized that China is eager to continue its partnership with Ghana, focusing on mutual benefits and shared development goals.
