The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has announced plans to relocate all regional airlines from Terminal 3 (T3) to Terminal 2 (T2) at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) effective December 1, 2024. This initiative aims to reduce congestion at the busy Terminal 3 while revitalizing the underutilized Terminal 2.
The move will impact regional carriers such as Air Cote D’Ivoire, ASKY Airlines, Ibom Air, Air Peace, and Africa World Airlines (AWA). These airlines currently operate from Terminal 3, which has experienced increased traffic and congestion.
Terminal 3, which serves international flights and key regional routes, has become increasingly congested due to rising passenger volumes. The relocation of regional airlines is expected to streamline passenger flow and enhance the travel experience for all travelers passing through the terminal.
The Airport’s Company said Terminal 2 has remained underutilized since Terminal 3’s opening in 2018. Relocating regional carriers to T2 will help maximize the airport’s existing infrastructure, optimizing operations and potentially increasing service levels for passengers.
Regional airlines and their passengers will transition to using Terminal 2, which will need communication and coordination to ensure smooth operations and minimal disruption. Airlines have emphasized the need for upgrades to facilities at T2 to meet the standards expected by passengers, particularly given the significant Airport Passenger Service Charge paid by their customers.
