First Sky Delivers Yendi’s 50MW Solar Plant: GRIDCo Links to National Grid

First Sky has completed a 50MW Yendi solar plant for BPA, with GRIDCo connecting it to the national grid to boost northern Ghana’s electricity supply.

First Sky Delivers Yendi’s 50MW Solar Plant: GRIDCo Links to National Grid

Wholly Ghanaian-owned, award-winning company, First Sky Ltd has completed a 50-megawatt (MW) solar power plant in Yendi, while the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has undertaken the transmission works to connect the facility to the national grid.

The project, developed by First Sky on behalf of the Bui Power Authority (BPA), is expected to strengthen electricity supply in northern Ghana and expand the country’s renewable energy generation capacity.

These details emerged during an inspection of the completed solar photovoltaic (PV) plant by Parliament’s Select Committee on Energy and Mines on October 26, 2026. The delegation was led by the committee’s Chair, Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, and included the Ranking Member, George Kwame Aboagye, and other members.

BPA’s expansion plans

The facility occupies about 140 acres in the Yendi area and is BPA’s first solar power project outside the Bui enclave.

BPA’s Director of Engineering, Peter Acheampong, told the committee that the authority expected to have installed about 300MW of power capacity in the Bui enclave by the end of 2026.

He said the Yendi Solar Power Station was BPA’s first project outside the enclave and expressed confidence that its connection to the national grid would improve the reliability of electricity supply across the northern parts of the country.

Local expertise drives project

Charles Edem Gidi, Director of Finance of First Sky Group and Chair of the Project Implementation Team, said the project was designed and executed using local expertise.

He described the plant as a model for future solar developments in Ghana, highlighting the role of domestic engineering capacity in delivering large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

The project also supports Ghana’s broader ambition to increase renewable energy’s contribution to the national electricity mix. Bedzrah said the country was working towards a target of 10% to 15% renewable energy in the grid mix by 2030.

Banks back project

The parliamentary committee commended First Sky and BPA for delivering the project and acknowledged Republic Bank and Zenith Bank for their financial support.

The project adds renewable energy capacity to Ghana’s electricity generation infrastructure, while the committee stressed the need for effective maintenance and security arrangements to protect the facility and preserve its value as a national energy asset.

Yendi Municipal Chief Executive Sugri Muniru said the Assembly would work to provide adequate security at the site, prevent theft and protect the installations and project land against encroachment.

The plant is expected to create employment opportunities in the Yendi area. Its long-term contribution to electricity reliability will depend on effective maintenance, security and the performance of the wider transmission network.

Grid connection and project delivery

The plant was technically ready on September 11, 2026, and commenced commercial operations after commissioning tests were completed and GRIDCo integrated it into the national transmission network.

GRIDCo’s work involved installing and integrating a four-kilometre, 161-kilovolt transmission line linking the solar plant to the Tamale-Yendi transmission network. The process also included integrating a 66-megavolt-ampere transformer into the transmission system.

The project took about three years to complete and was developed using Ghanaian expertise.
