Electrochem Ghana Limited has denied allegations of a confrontation between its security personnel and local community members during an incident involving illegal mining at the Songor Lagoon on Monday, December 23.
The company has dismissed reports and a circulating video as misleading and described them as a false narrative potentially aimed at tarnishing its reputation. Electrochem reiterated its commitment to transparency and peaceful community engagement in all its operations.
In a statement, Electrochem Ghana Limited clarified that its security personnel encountered unauthorized miners during a routine patrol of the lagoon. According to the company, the situation was resolved peacefully after a 30-minute engagement with the miners, with no confrontation occurring. The company further emphasized that it adheres to strict protocols to avoid any form of conflict during such incidents.
Since acquiring the Songor Lagoon concession in 2020, Electrochem has invested millions of dollars into restoring the lagoon, which had been significantly degraded by years of illegal mining activities. These efforts include environmental conservation initiatives aimed at preserving the lagoon’s ecological integrity while ensuring sustainable operations.

The company has introduced initiatives such as the outgrower scheme and community salt pans, aimed at providing alternative livelihoods for locals. These programs grant residents access to high-quality brine for sustainable salt production at no cost, fostering economic empowerment for the community.
“Our goal is to promote sustainable solutions that benefit everyone while preserving the ecological integrity of the lagoon,” the statement noted. Electrochem continues to work closely with local stakeholders to ensure the long-term success of these programs.

Electrochem Ghana Limited, established in 2017, operates a 41,000-acre concession at Songor Lagoon and aims to become a leading producer in West Africa’s salt industry. The company’s operations are expected to yield up to one million metric tons of salt annually for local and export markets, solidifying Ghana’s position in the global salt trade.
The company has also emphasized its dedication to building strong relationships with the communities in and around Songor Lagoon. Through regular dialogue and collaboration, Electrochem seeks to balance economic development with environmental and social responsibility.
