After over 20 years of dedicated service, Dr. Sulemanu Koney has retired as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, bringing an end to an era of influential leadership in the country’s mining sector. Dr. Koney, who became CEO in 2014, had reached the statutory retirement age in April 2024 but was asked by the Chamber’s Council to continue in the role until March 2025, allowing him to complete his final year at the helm.
In a press statement, Dr. Koney’s retirement was announced, with the Chamber acknowledging his significant contributions to the mining industry in Ghana.
Dr. Koney first joined the Ghana Chamber of Mines in 2000 as Director of Analysis, Research, and Finance. His career at the Chamber saw him rise through the ranks, culminating in his appointment as CEO, where he played a pivotal role in advancing the mining sector’s growth. Under his leadership, the Chamber spearheaded numerous initiatives, including promoting responsible mining practices, advocating for better fiscal policies, and working closely with both government and industry stakeholders to strengthen Ghana’s position as a mining powerhouse.
Throughout his tenure, Dr. Koney emphasized sustainability, local content, and the importance of maintaining a responsible approach to mining that would benefit not only the industry but also the wider Ghanaian economy. His legacy includes helping shape a more resilient and collaborative mining sector, positioning it as a cornerstone of the country’s development.
Mr. Michael Edem Akafia, President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, expressed deep appreciation for Dr. Koney’s service, noting his exceptional leadership and commitment to the industry. “Dr. Koney’s contributions have been truly invaluable. With Dr. Koney’s retirement, Mr. Ahmed Dasana Nantogmah, the Chamber’s Director of External Relations and Communications, will step in as Acting CEO. Mr. Nantogmah brings over 26 years of experience in the mining sector and is well-regarded for his expertise in stakeholder relations, sustainability, and public communications. His experience and leadership will guide the Chamber through this transition and continue its important work in shaping the future of Ghana’s mining industry.
