-Call for Police Reform
Democracy Hub protesters have called for the immediate release of 53 demonstrators arrested by police during their recent protests.
The group, in a petition presented to the Attorney General’s Office (AG), urged the AG to launch an administrative investigation into the police’s handling of the situation and to ensure swift justice.
The protesters also demanded that the AG develop and implement a policy for training police officers on the rights of individuals during and after protests, as well as on the proper treatment of those arrested. “We urge you to treat this petition with the urgency it deserves and correct it without delay of injustice being suffered by the citizens of our great nation,” the group stated.
The spokesperson for the AG, Isaac Wilberforce Mensah, assured the demonstrators that their concerns would be addressed.
Meanwhile, 32 anti-illegal mining protesters have filed a lawsuit against the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Attorney General, alleging violations of their human rights. The lawsuit seeks to enforce the protesters’ fundamental rights, including freedom of movement, the right to protest, personal liberty, and protection from unlawful arrest and detention.
The Ghana Police Service (GPS) accused the protesters of obstructing traffic, dismantling barriers, and causing damage at Accra’s 37 Roundabout. Of the 53 arrested, nine have been imprisoned, while the others remain in custody.
The prosecution denies any mistreatment, stating that the detainees are being properly cared for, including the provision of meals.
The protest is set to continue tomorrow, with another petition to be presented to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources.
